School Board AFEs

School Board AFEs may include:

  • Classrooms with grades, subject areas or age groups outside of your current experience
  • School resource personnel, librarians, guidance counsellors or specialist teachers
  • Out-of-province or non-Ontario curriculum schools
  • School board offices
  • TIP – connect with previous Associate Teachers for advice and ideas

When arranging an AFE with an Ontario school board, clearly articulate that you are NOT inquiring about a practicum, but about an Alternative Field Experience (similar to an internship or volunteering).

Teacher candidates are required to have an OCT certified teacher in the classroom as a direct supervisor for all school board AFE placements, at all times. Teacher Candidates must not:

  • be left on their own during the absence of an Associate Teacher;
  • assume unsupervised responsibility for students;
  • take the place of a supply teacher.

A Teacher Candidate may continue under the supervision of an occasional teacher.

All Ontario school boards will require teacher candidates completing their AFE with them meet their board-specific requirements.

Some Ontario school boards require all AFE placements to be coordinated centrally through the Teacher Education office. Please review the below list to confirm the steps in arranging an AFE for your preferred board.

For boards that are not listed, you may connect directly with the teacher and/or principal of the school. It is strongly recommended that you also seek approval through the principal of the school in all cases (whether directly or through the supervising teacher).
