Hello Althouse Teacher College,
LUSO Community Services is a non-profit multicultural community centre dedicated to promoting inclusiveness, well-being and the prosperity of the London community.
We are pleased to announce the 2019 date for one of our biggest events of the year – Family Literacy Day! The event will take place on Saturday, January 26th from 11am-2pm in the Northeast area of London in celebration of National Family Literacy Day.
As an Althouse alumnus, I believe this event would be an excellent opportunity for teacher candidates to run a literacy-based activity for children and their families at a local elementary school–Northbrae Public School. Candidates would be provided with space in the school gym and a table to run an activity. We are working towards confirming the combined space of Northbrae Public School and Family Centre Carling-Thames (355 Belfield Street) for this event, where we were located last year.
Our event this year is ocean-themed and called Dive Into Reading! It is my hope that Althouse teacher candidates will be able to join us and facilitate a fun, engaging, and hands-on activity that families can take part in. The activity, game, or craft should involve families in literacy development and be inspired by the ocean theme. We define literacy broadly as:
- The ability to identify, understand, create, communicate and interpret using printed and written materials (reading, writing, and numeracy skills)
- The ability to express thoughts, feelings and ideas (emotional and physical literacy)
The event will provide a great opportunity to promote the programs and services that you offer to the London community. Last year we had about 200 individuals join us for this event. Moreover, this event also focuses on building community awareness about the importance of family literacy.
Please email me if you are interested in joining us on Saturday, January 26th for our Family Literacy Day event, Dive Into Reading! Once I receive confirmation about your participation, we can speak more about what activity you will be hosting for families.
Please share this email if you know of another staff member or community organization that would be a good fit for this event. Please do not hesitate to contact me at email@example.com or 519-452-1466 if you have any questions.
