Thinking about an International AFE?

Incoming and current teacher candidates may already be thinking about their AFE in year 2. If you are considering an international placement, review these quick tips for starting your preparations…

Update your passport: Many countries require that your passport is valid 3-6 months (or more) after the end of your visit. Avoid stress now by checking entry/exit requirements and ensuring your passport is valid during your intended travel time.

Check out Faculty-arranged options: Fall opportunities are typically posted in the Summer before year 2, and Spring opportunities are posted during the Fall of year 2. 2018-19 options are currently under review and will be posted soon – stay tuned!

Explore Western’s ATLAS: This online database is a collection of international opportunities available to all Western students. Keep in mind, in order to be considered for an AFE, the placement must have a connection to education (and to your specialty cohort for AFE 1).

Learn about pre-departure workshops: Teacher candidates participating in University sanctioned international travel must complete Western’s pre-departure training, in addition to any specific training required by your program. Western International offers these sessions online via OWL. On-site components will be scheduled during the year as well, so stay tuned to the T2P schedule for more details!

Finally, take a look at our AFE Updates and AFE FAQs – you may just find exactly the information you’re looking for! If not, contact our Program Coordinator, Rebecca.
